Have you been wondering what is the meaning behind the Woven Winds brand identity? Our brand, "Woven Winds," draws inspiration from the rich history of Bengali muslin cotton, a fabric so fine it was said to be woven from the very air itself. The term "Woven Winds" is a poetic nod to the ancient art of muslin weaving, a craft that dates back thousands of years in the Bengal region of India and Bangladesh.
Bengali muslin, often referred to as "the fabric of royalty," was renowned for its extraordinary lightness and delicate texture. In the 17th and 18th centuries, this exquisite textile captivated the world, with its gossamer threads (delicate strands of spider's silk) and intricate patterns. So fine was the fabric that it was famously described as “woven air” or “morning dew,” leading to the enchanting term "Woven Winds." The Romans are credited with popularising the phrase “Woven Winds”.
The weavers of Bengal, known as tantis, used their skill and creativity to produce muslin that was so light, a whole sari could pass through a ring. These weavers dedicated their lives to perfecting their art, often working in humid conditions by the riverside to keep the threads moist and manageable.
Today, our brand "Woven Winds" pays homage to this legendary craft, infusing modern designs with the timeless elegance of Bengali muslin. We celebrate the legacy of the tantis, whose artistry continues to inspire. Our clothing collection showcases a variety of handloom woven textiles from around India and Asia.
